1791: Henry Runyan purchases land; first settlers arrive 1788-1792. Town named "Sharon" after a small town in Pennsylvania. Newly plotted town includes 71 lots for 47 people.
1876: Town renamed "Sharonville" due to confusion with another town named "Sharon" in eastern Ohio.
1962: Population exceeds 5,000 - "Sharonville" becomes a city.
The City of Sharonville is located in the Greater Cincinnati Region of south west Ohio. Sharonville is in north east Hamilton County with a small section of the city moving into southern Butler County. Today, the City hosts many trucking firms that take advantage of the Interstate highways, I-75 and I-275, which crisscross the City, and I-71 that is only one mile to the east.
In 1788 settlers first came to the area now known as Sharonville. As more and more people migrated into southwest Ohio, Sharon as it was know then, became a stopover for stagecoaches traveling from Cincinnati, twelve miles south, to Lebanon, seventeen miles north. As years went by, transportation became a major theme in the town’s development. This was followed by the development of the Miami and Erie Canals. In 1872 the first train came to town and eventually a major railroad facility was established. Railroading became the town’s predominant occupation for many years.
Sharonville became an incorporated village in 1911 and obtained city status in 1962. Today the City occupies 10.7 square miles and has 124 lane miles of streets. The residential population is 13,840 but swells to more than 36,800 during the day because of the workforce. Sharonville is served by the Princeton City School District.
Sharonville has always been a great place to live, work and visit. It has almost 7,000 homes and apartment units, 21 motels, 50 restaurants, 20 office buildings and over 1,200 businesses. The city serves its residents and businesses with three firehouses staffed with a total of 72 full time / part time firefighters / EMTs / paramedics; a Police Department of 48; the Public Works Department with dump trucks, snow plows and a 19-man crew, as well as its Administration / Finance Department, Building Department, Tax Department, Convention Center facility and staff and the Recreation / Parks Department.
Sharonville has a statutory form of government with an elected Mayor, President of Council and seven Council members. Council meetings are open to the public and are held on the second and last Tuesday evenings of the month with a reduced summer session. |
